Dance Drama: Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva

" A deadly plague breaks out in the Dai Kingdom a long time ago.The kind-hearted third princess pledges to seek the magical lotus to cure her father, the King. Dance Drama "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva" performed by the Taiyuan Dance Troupe of Shanxi Province, is the latest work of Zhang Jigang, a famous Chinese choreographer best-known for directing the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The dance drama which is making its debut in Singapore was the result of seven years in artistic-making and generated rave reviews when it was performed in Beijing. Performed outside of China for the first time, this mega production is unlike any other "Thousand Bodhisattva" dance productions which were previously staged in Singapore. "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva" is told through 12 odes with 12 dances. Each ode and dance can be viewed as a separate episode and together as an integrated story. In the story, the ancient country of Dai is attacked by a plague and the king himself falls ill. With his life at stake, the youngest of his three daughters sets out on an arduous journey to search for the magical lotus flower which can save his life. The eldest daughter who covets the throne, sends a servant, Tongzi, to rob the princess of the flower and prevent the king from surviving.
